LO3: Creating production materials

Front Cover

The first stage of making my front cover was editing my cover image. I used a large profile shot of my cover star as this is what appears on the covers of almost all well known sports magazines. To create this image I sed the magnetic lasso tool to remove the background from the image. I also used the 'curves' tool to alter the contrast of the image in order to make it appear more colourful as the original image looked a bit dull.
This screenshot shows me designing the plug and one of the pull quotes that will appear on my front cover. The plug fits my magazine as it incorporates the house style colours which helps further create a brand. It fits with the genre of my magazine as lots of football magazines feature a plug on the front cover that is usually used to advertise a competition.
This screenshot shows me creating the banner at the top of my cover page as well as the main cover line. I wrote my main cover line in large bold font to make it stand out to the reader. It follows the style of professional magazines like FourFourTwo that also use large, bold fonts to make it clear to the reader what the main story in the magazine is.

Contents Page

This screenshot shows me designing the main headings for my contents page. I have implemented my house style by highlighting the subtitles in my house style colours (black, white, red). This fits the style of my magazine as many real magazine use a similar design to this (highlighting subtitles in house style colours).
This screenshot shows me adding my introduction and page titles to my contents page. I have written my introduction in a handwriting style font as it is written by "the editor" in the first person and I feel the font style helps implement a personal tone. I have written my page titles in a large, bold font and highlighted the page numbers of key articles with a 'housestyle coloured' circle. This fits the genre of my magazine as many real magazines also highlight their key articles on their contents page so the reader know where the most important articles are located.

This screenshot shows me adding my masthead to my contents page and creating a graphic to advertise one of my key articles. Adding my masthead helps further create a brand and implementing the graphic to advertise one of my key articles will hopefully make the reader more likely to read the article.

Double Page Spread
This screenshot shows me designing the player profile section of my double page spread. I have added a large image of the player my article focuses on  to take up two thirds of the page. On the right side of the page I have added a red box that contains key facts about the player to complete the profile section. This fits the genre of my magazine as many real football magazines add a player profile when writing an article about them so the reader can get to know the player better.

This screenshot shows me adding the rest of my article to my double page spread as well as a slug to the top left corner of the page. I added the slug to make my double page spread look more like a real magazine as many popular football magazines, such as FourFourTwo, use a slug at the top of the page so the reader can quickly see the topic of the article.

In this final screenshot I added a border to the right side of the page to connect to a second slug. This helps fill the blank space at the side of my article as well as making it look more professional as many real magazines add a border to at least one side of the page in a colour that represents the theme of the article. I coloured my border red as my model is wearing a red football kit in all the photos I have included, it therefore fits the theme of the article. I also added two images on the right page. I added a profile shot graphic I previously made to make it look like a polaroid and an action shot of my model with the background removed so I could place it in the middle of my article and have the text flow around it. I did this as adding an image in the middle of a long piece of text is likely to keep the reader interested.
